For some crazy reason, when I found out I was going to CGA, I knew I was supposed to drive across the country to Georgia from San Francisco. I could have flown, but something in my gut told me that I would be staying in the east for a while and that I was going to drive.
So, on January 7th, I got in my car with my friend Alysea and we set on our way to drive over 2,400 miles to Atlanta, GA from the San Francisco Bay Area. This west coast girl was on her way to become a southern belle!
The last view of home, sweet home!
The first day, we made it 580 mi to Kingman, AZ. It was a beautiful drive through the Sierra Nevadas, listening to some great old tunes found on an old iPod of mine.
The second day, we made our way to Amarillo, TX through snow and rain another 750+ mi.
It was going well right until we got off the high way in Amarillo… As we went around a turn, we slid on black ice underneath some snow and smacked into the median. We hit directly on the rim of our front right tire and it cracked the rim right along the side! It looked like someone took a can opener to it. The whole time Jesus was right along the side of us and it was a miracle that our tire didn’t blow.
We made our way less than a mile to our hotel because it was late about 10:30 at night and went to bed so we could take care of it in the morning. We awoke in the morning and called AAA to get the car towed and the guy showed up in no time. He was so very sweet and caring and we appreciated him so much. We got it towed to a tire place and we couldn’t believe the service! We were getting our first taste of southern hospitality and it helped keep us calm. The entire staff took turns looking at our tire, dumbfounded that it hadn’t blown. After we got a new wheel, they told us we weren’t allowed back on the road until we took it a mechanic down the road.. And again! We experienced amazing service from a family run mechanic shop. He took such good care of us and fixed our car up until we were on our way.
We were set back time wise and didn’t get on the road until almost 5:00pm so we made our way to Oklahoma City for the night. And on our last day of driving, we made it to Atlanta in about 10 hours, all together over 35 hours of driving and over 2,400 mi in the car!
We had a wonderful time, rocking out to worship, 90s music, and more while enjoying the beauty of this country. It’s funny, I’ve always wanted to drive across the country and I got the chance to enjoy it with a wonderful friend. I thought it would be for vacation and then a flight home.. But it was the beginning to a grand new adventure of living in Gainesville, GA.
This photo was taken by Johnfrank Dieguez, a staff member at Adventures in Missions. I was a little busy to take photos of Gainesville this past week, haha.
And now I’m in my #homesweetsouth for this next season of my life!
